The Black Rhino Game Reserve
A beautiful remote bushveld getaway
The Black Rhino Reserve borders the Pilanesberg Game Reserve on its northwestern corner. The reserve is a private concession with its own entrance, namely the Black Rhino Reserve Gate, which is located on the R565.
The reserve is only about 1,800 hectares in size, but a 'fence-drop' initiative with the North West Parks & Tourism Board allows traversing rights throughout Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
The Black Rhino Reserve, also in a malaria-free area, is about 33km north of Sun City and less than 2 hours drive from Johannesburg.
The Reserve is characterized by large number of Tamboti trees which attract the scarce black rhino. These trees also host a wide variety of bird species thus making the area a birding paradise.
The sweet veld vegetation of this lower lying reserve complements Pilanesberg's predominantly mixed sour veld and thus also carries a wide variety of game species. Sightings of elephant, black rhino and white rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard and a variety of antelope species are quite common here.
Visitors may enjoy a more exclusive wildlife experience than driving through the busier southern section of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Game drives take guests through the Black Rhino Reserve into the unexplored valley of the Pilanesberg before reaching the 200km road network in Pilanesberg itself.
How to get here
Travel along the N4 and take the R510 to Sun City. From the Sun City gate continue traveling in the direction of Rustenburg for about 4km on the R565. At the stop street, turn right and travel about 30km on the tar road to Madikwe. The entrance to the Black Rhino Game Reserve is on right.
Air travel to Lanseria or OR Tambo International Airports is possible. Transfers from the airports to the reserve is by arrangement.
Private Concession Area
Please take note that the Black Rhino Game Reserve falls within a private concession area of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve and as such offers no day visitor facilities. Acess to this area is also restricted to guests of the lodges situated in the Black Rhino Game Reserve.
